Description

System Security Engineer in the Systems Security Engineering Section (TEC-ESS), Radio Frequency Systems Technology Division, Electrical Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

The System Security Engineering Section, in full respect and compliance with the ESA Security Framework, covers the security engineering processes, techniques and technologies dealing with the security of systems from the end-to-end point of view, the subsystems, the elements and equipment contributing or implementing specific detection/mitigation and protection measures, the analysis and methodology for vulnerability assessments and standards, including system design tools and equipment.

Duties

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the ESA system security engineering team of Secure Connectivity (IRISS).
  • Participate in program reviews of IRISS assessing design, implementation, qualification and validation, to ensure development is in line with relevant program security requirements.
  • Review and contribute to system security architecture, system security requirements and propose improvements.
  • Analyse and access security related Requests for Deviations / Requests for Waivers and recommend proposed way forward.
  • Review the design, proposed implementations and technologies, identify potential vulnerabilities, analysing their exploitability and their impact, and propose the appropriate mitigations and required countermeasures..
  • Interface with the EC and EUSPA on system security engineering topics.
  • Follow the implementation of the mitigation actions (either internally or with industry/partners).
  • Coordinate with ESO the security risk, the vulnerabilities assessment, and the threat analysis, in order to follow up the related design and development implementation.
  • Coordinate with ESA Security Office on security accreditation and security risk assessment aspects.
  • Support the development and maintenance of various technical documents (requirements, security management plans, risk assessments, ICDs, etc.).
  • Follow System Integration, Testing, Verification and Validation, assess compliance to the requirements and propose treatment plans.
  • Foster new security application areas for multidisciplinary activities, placing emphasis on innovative concepts, cutting-edge technologies and system architectures in the field of security;
  • Propose and supervise / follow as a Technical Officer Research and Development activities in the area of SATCOM security with a particular focus on technologies relevant for Secure Connectivity (IRISS).
  • Participate in the follow-up of industrial contracts related to procurement of expertise, technology development, laboratory tools, equipment, etc.
  • Continuously follow technological trends and evolutions at the scientific fields relevant for this position.

Technical competencies

Very good knowledge on system engineering

Very good knowledge of security threats against space missions and corresponding mitigations

Good Cyber security technical expertise

Knowledge on the security of 5G (including NTN) technologies

Knowledge on modern Applied Crypto

Good knowledge on security standards, hardening guidelines and security best practices

Knowledge and experience on vulnerability analysis

Education

A master's degree (or PhD) in Telecommunications Engineering or Cybersecurity or Computer / Network Engineering or Aerospace Engineering or in other relevant engineering field is required for this post.

Additional requirements

  • Very good analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and with Industry.
  • Very good technical knowledge of modern secure network protocols
  • Knowledge of space flight avionics and the associated security is a plus.
  • Applicants must be eligible for security clearance by their national security administrations.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

Applicants must be eligible to access technology and hardware which is subject to European and US export control regulations.
