The Faculty of Science Leiden and Leiden Observatory are looking for a Integration Facility Lead.

Together with the instrument team, you will participate in the overall assembly, integration and test (AIT) of a scientifically and technologically innovative and complex astronomical instrument (METIS: Mid-Infrared ELT Imager and Spectroscope) on the world's largest optical telescope (ESO's Extremely Large Telescope- ELT).

Work and profile
You will be responsible for the METIS AIT facility control, preparation, and operation, maintenance and safety. You will have an integral part of the subsystems' local acceptance, instrument system integration and testing as well as preparation for transportation and on-site verification. Developing this instrument for the ELT is a project that is being realized by a consortium of research institutes in several European countries, under the leadership of the Dutch Research School for Astronomy (NOVA). You will be part of this interdisciplinary, international consortium.

Your duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Facility responsibility, control, preparation and operation;
  • Local hands-on support for integration activities in cooperation with the respective team lead;
  • Responsible to track all operations within the facility;
  • Full control and traceability of parts moved in or out of the facility;
  • Accessibility to all (support) equipment within the facility and to all pieces/parts of the instrument;
  • Participation in all local acceptance review boards;
  • Regular reporting all operations and current status of the facility to the AIT lead, the System AIT manager, the CSE, and the PI;
  • Co-responsible with the AIT lead to follow the system AIT schedule.

Selection criteria

  • At least 5+ years relevant experience in lab and engineering environment and technical facilities;
  • Experience in leading and working in teams of multidisciplinary-multinational engineers and scientists;
  • Experience building optical and/or infrared instruments is a plus (also cryogenics is strongly desired);
  • Experience in clean-room operations;
  • Proficient oral, written and interpersonal communications skills;
  • Expected start date as soon as possible, specifics are negotiable.

It is the largest astronomy department in the Netherlands, with about 35 faculty and adjunct faculty, 50 postdoctoral researchers, 80 PhD students 30 support staff and over a 100 MSc students. We offer a full-time, 4 year term position. The salary range is from € 3.377,- to € 4.670,- gross per month, based on a full-time appointment (pay scale 9 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
